Test Tips

1. Draw a diagram
In the math section, don't lose time by over-thinking problems. Jump in and try things out. Simply writing the problem again or reorganizing the numbers can light a path to the solution.

2. Be patient
Too many students rush to finish. Don't be afraid to take time on questions you know you can get right.

3. Don't be afraid to guess
If you can eliminate even one answer choice, you stand to gain points by guessing. Mathematically speaking, you aren't risking anything when you guess blindly. So if you can eliminate two or three answer choices, you MUST guess!

4. Slow the end
Points are lost when students make simple mistakes by rushing at the end of a problem. Keep your focus and follow through to the end of every problem.

5. Train hard
Michael Jordan was so intense in practice - keeping score, pushing himself and his teammates - he would sometimes even get into arguments during practice. Taking practice seriously sharpened his mental game as well as his physical skills, so when it was all on the line, especially at the ends of games when all the other players felt the pressure - it felt just like practice for Michael. If you take your practice tests and homework seriously and pretend it's the actual exam, when test day comes, you'll have the edge, too.

6. Start early
Students gain a huge advantage when they start preparing for the SAT in December of their junior year. Start early and you'll know what to expect and won't be slowed down by surprises. Students who prepare for the PSAT in the summer before junior year perform better when the SAT comes around. Students who prepare early can improve their scores by 400-600 points!

8. Take a lot of tests
Taking lots of practice tests is a cornerstone of any good test prep program. Take as many tests as you can - actual tests - and you'll build the confidence, familiarity and focus you'll need to succeed on test day.

9. Read the directions
Make sure you're answering the question that's being asked. Read each question carefully to avoid making simple mistakes and losing points you deserve.

10. Read
While it's a no-brainer that building your reading skills helps you on Verbal sections, success on math sections also depends on reading ability. Call us to get the Pinnacle Prep reading list, proven to help you improve your reading skills. The more reading you do, the better your scores will be, so read, read, read!
